Cemetery Awareness

Are you looking for ways to create awareness of a cemetery in your area?  Perhaps, you might want to consider locating others who are interested in the cemetery and form a 'friends of the cemetery' group.  A good place to start is by locating descendents of those buried in the cemetery.  If you need some publicity or need to create local awareness of a cemetery, try having an open house and offer tours of the cemetery to the general public.  During the past couple of years, I have learned of a number of these cemetery open houses / tours.  They have been very successful.  Cemetery open houses / tours can be a great place to make family connections for genealogists!

Do you have a historical cemetery or a cemetery with notable burials in your area?  You might want to consider creating some sort of flyer.  This past summer, I visited Deadwood, South Dakota’s Mount Moriah ‘Boot Hill’ Cemetery.  This cemetery is a public cemetery owned by the city of Deadwood.  While there, I picked up a copy of their cemetery flyer and walked the cemetery.  You might want to consider such a flyer for your cemetery.  Every cemetery has its share of interesting persons and tragic stories.
